Thanks for reading Steven. Probably just a matter of semantics here.
Tesla is the most mission-driven, transparent, customer-aligned, forward-thinking car manufacturer today. But as they’d tell you themselves, their self-driving product is still a half-assed solution. For reference, and to my point:
No-assed: a car that requires you to operate it.
Whole-assed: a car that does not require you to operate it.
Half-assed: a car that ultimately requires your operation, but provides a temporary means of fooling yourself or others into believing it doesn’t.
You can see the potential problems in allowing the half-assed car driver to take his pick as to which group he wants to be in at any given moment. Autopilot and competing tech works in-market today because, like cruise control, and ABS, and all other driving aids to date, the driver is still held responsible. When Tesla self-insures its vehicles and takes responsibility for anything that happens to them while in motion, that will mark their whole-assed offering.
