State Of Autonomy: January Recap

For those who need to make a conference call between conference calls.

Every month, I recap the news articles I’ve consumed around autonomous vehicles, calling out the highlights and keeping track of market progress. This is also your chance to nominate a topic for discussion next month.

CES has quickly emerged as the only relevant auto show in America, and in past years, that meant big self-driving claims hitting the press right around the first week of January. But apart from the PR ripples of Toyota’s and NVIDIA’s announcements, there was little to go gaga over.

What dominated headlines instead was a repeat episode of Fear Mongerers (is that a show? How is it not a show?) where the evil autonomous vehicles somehow manage to create gridlock because it’s cheaper to drive around waiting to pick you up than it is to park. I believe it’s the third time this theory has made the rounds on the starving reporter circuit, except now it’s supported by academic “research”… which I will promptly dismantle in my next article.

This year’s Self-Racing Cars event is just around the corner — if you’ll be in the NorCal area during late March, you should attend!
